Mandatory Camping!!!

Hey! Look what I found in the Bible! Mandatory camping! Yaaayy!!!

Nehemiah 8:13-18:

13 "The next day the heads of the clans, together with the priests and the Levites, went to Ezra to study the teachings of the Law. 14 They discovered that the Law, which the Lord gave through Moses, ordered the people of Israel to live in temporary shelters during the Festival of Shelters. 15 So they gave the following instructions and sent them all through Jerusalem and the other cities and towns: "Go out to the hills and get branches from pines, olives, myrtles, palms, and other trees to make shelters according to the instructions written in the Law." 16 So the people got branches and built shelters on the flat roofs of their houses, in their yards, in the Temple courtyard, and in the public squares by the Water Gate and by the Ephraim Gate. 17 All the people who had come back from captivity built shelters and lived in them. This was the first time it had been done since the days of Joshua son of Nun, and everybody was excited and happy. 18 From the first day of the festival to the last they read a part of God's Law every day. They celebrated for seven days, and on the eighth day there was a closing ceremony, as required in the Law."

They had to go camping, even if it was in their own "backyard", to celebrate the Festival of Shelters! And all the people loved it! (Of course they did)! And they read God's Word everyday!!! WOOT!

All right! There can be no more excuses! Camping is no longer optional!!! :D

I know, I love hearing about that Jewish holiday!! :D

It sounds so wonderful! :D

I can't help but wonder if we shouldn't be celebrating that too. As Christians, we follow the Ten Commandments, which are part of the Law, and follow some other parts of the Law, as well. Why not this Holiday too?

Wow, are you named after Aslan from CS Lewis' books? I think that is so cool!

Well, my mom could explain it much better, but it has something to do with all of those feasts and sacrifices and things not being needed after Jesus' death - because His death was the ultimate sacrifice, so we don't need that anymore, and now we have the Lord's Supper, instead of the feasts. *And* we get a feast every Sunday, instead of every few months (depending on what church you go to, of course).

But "mandatory camping" and reading the Bible every day sounds fun to me, too! I'm sure some people have Bible camps like that but I've never been to one.

Robnificent: Heehee. No, Aslan symbolizes the One I admire most and strive to emulate. Nice to meet you! :)

Elai: Thanks. Yeah, I thought it was something along those lines. But I just don't know the specific verses that allow for a certain requirement here or another there to be dismissed. I know Peter had the vision, for example, where God permitted us to eat a greater variety of animals, than in the Old Testament. I just hope our Christian forebears "rightly divided the Word", when they were figuring out which things we no longer had to do and which we did.

Imagine getting to Heaven and God’s like,
“YOU DIDN’T GO CAMPING!”
*POW!*
j/k Lol. Fortunately, God is willing to forgive us if we accidentally misunderstood something. *wipes brow*

It sounded like Bible camp to me too! ^_^ I’ve never been to one, but I think Lysha has!

O_O Yeah, on second thought, I might just try to persuade my parents to send me to a Bible camp. Just in case. And even if it's not neccesary, it won't hurt, right?

Aslan said...

Lol. Yeah, it wouldn't hurt to celebrate the Festival of Shelters. :) I just wish I had time to do the scriptural analyses myself, so I could feel sure about these kinds of changes.

Christian scholars have probably been deliberating such things for centuries, but I'm sure no denomination gets everything right. I will do my best, with God's help, to follow His Word, and rely on His mercy and grace!

Allegro: I used to hate the idea of camping too, out there with all those snakes and spiders, lol. But after trying it my frist time, I LOVED it. I still pray, of course, before each trip. It's still wild out there. Oh, I forgot to mention bears. Nevermind. Where am I going with this? I'm trying to say how much I love camping too! There.
Hopefully, you'll get a chance to go again soon! :D Thanks!

Danika: Hey! ^_^ I'll be posting again probably by this weekend!

haha I come on your blog and see my name mentioned on your comments. Scary- but cool! And yes I go to a camp in the summer for a week where we have almost the whole day filled with Bible classes and all that. It ROCKS. Rob, who commented up there, was my Bible class teacher this year along with his dad!

Mandatory camping... That's really amusing.

Aslan said...

Lol. Yeah, I thought I remembered you talking about Bible camp on your blog. So cool! :) Hehe, I figured Rob was one of your friends, and I can see why he would be a good Bible teacher. He wrote a poem on his blog several days ago that just blew me away! :D

geez... wow...
anyways, can I go camping too?!
:D

Aslan said...

Lol. I'm afraid we must! :D It's compulsory!

Really, I'm not sure that we have to. (See the discussion above).

Camping ROCKS! But don't camp on a rock. (See the other discussion above).

Mandatory or not, I will always go camping!!! (When I have the time) :P

*pokes* You know, I think you posting on your blog ought to be mandatory too.

:D I was hoping people would! I'm glad you like it. :)

I've got an idea for my next post, but I can't seem to get the rest of it nailed down. If I pray about it, what else to say will eventually come to me...
